Hey you! Yeah you in that fleshy thing your soul is tethered to? You know, your Earth Suit. Did you ever get a manual with it? Me either.
Remember “PE” class? Shouldn’t that have taught us something about maintaining our bodies? Calisthenics and dodge ball were a nice break from social studies, but what did we really learn about our earth bound temple?
Did you know that it’s actually designed to improve with age? What?!!! Yeah, we’re not designed to shrink and become increasingly immobile. However, there are many businesses that benefit from that dogma, along with our pain and disabilities, so the myths live on (for the sake of the economy, of course).
Wanna do something about it? The Greeks have a different word for their earth suit. They call it a soma. A soma’s just like a body, only it’s viewed as a self aware, sensing, motoring (moving), self regulating, self balancing information probe that seeks ease, balance and freedom as it continuously assesses the environing moment in the here and now.
Want to improve your own “somatic” awareness?
Keith Ranney has been practicing Hanna Somatic Education since Feb. 2000.
Your soma will thank you.
